Bologna is a city in northern Italy, Emilia-Romagna region, which is located between two rivers - Savena and Reno. The city has a population of around 377,000 as of 2009. Bologna is considered one of the wealthiest cities in Italy with a high quality of life. The city was founded by the Etruscans in 534 BC. under the name Felsina. In the 4th century BC. the Gaulish Boi tribe conquered it and from there derives its ancient name Bononia.

The city is home to the oldest university in the world, the University of Bologna "Alma Mater Studiorum", which was founded in 1088 and is one of the best and most developed in all of Italy. Dante, Erasmus, Nicolaus Copernicus, Petrarch studied at this university. Bologna is one of the greatest historical centers in Italy, as it has preserved a large number of important monuments from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque eras. There are numerous basilicas and churches. Some of the most beautiful buildings in Bologna can be seen around Piazza Maggiore, such as the Mayor's Palace and the Church of St. Petronius", which is the largest in the city and is dedicated to St. Petronius - the patron saint of Bologna. The archaeological museum of the city preserves remains from the time of the Egyptians and Etruscans.

 

Bologna is famous for its cuisine. Bolognese sauce, which is used in the preparation of macaroni and other types of pasta, is named after him. Also a local delicacy is Mortadella. Wine production is well developed in the area of ​​the city.
