Купола на Брунелески

Флоренция, Италия

Santa Maria del Fiore is the main cathedral in Florence. Its construction began in 1294, and the idea was to demonstrate the greatness of Florence with this building. The building's finish would be a glittering dome. However, at the time no one had a clear idea of exactly how to build such a dome with a diameter of 40 m, starting at a height of 55 m, on top of already existing walls. For decades, the cathedral stood with a huge hole in its roof. Only in 1418, the Florentines announced a competition to design the ideal dome, and its winner received a chance for eternal glory. It was a self-taught goldsmith with no architectural education - Filippo Brunelleschi. Brunelleschi's creation is a combination of unconventional thought and fighting spirit. The way he built the dome - without supporting scaffolding - is impressive. Brunelleschi created two domes - one, of which serves to support the other, and the stones of the arches themselves are supported during construction. It creates an inner shell of over four million bricks arranged in a zigzag pattern, overlapping one another. It also creates a stone chain to evenly distribute tension and reduce weight. The outer shell supports the roof and protects the inner one. Between the two are stairs that lead to the highest part of the dome - the lantern. The construction of the dome was completed in 1436, making the cathedral the fourth largest in the world. Undeniably, the octagonal masterpiece makes Filippo Brunelleschi a great Renaissance architect. which distributes the tension evenly and reduces the weight.
