Small Lake Prespa is a lake in the geographical area of Macedonia divided between Greece and Albania. The lake is part of the Aegean Lakes group and is located at an altitude of 853 meters in the western part of Macedonia in the Prespa Valley south of the Great Prespa Lake. Its area is 48 square kilometers, and the depth is about 8 meters. It has an oval shape, with most of it in Greece, on the territory of Prespa (43.5 km²), and only a small part in Albania, on the territory of Devol County (3.9 km²). The largest tributary of the Small Prespa Lake is the Old River (Paliorema or Agios Germanos), which springs from Mount Pelister and is about 10 kilometers long. In 1936, however, the Greek government diverted the course of the Stara Reka in the direction of the Great Prespa Lake, where it flows to this day. After a few years, an artificial channel was dug connecting the two lakes, along which fishing boats could be transported. Today, this channel is closed naturally and the two lakes are separated again. The lake is part of the large Prespa Nature Park, formed by the three governments - of the Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Albania, in the Prespa area. The area is home to many endangered bird species such as pelicans.
